When skin is injured, fibrous tissue (called scar tissue) forms over the wound to repair and protect the injury. In some cases, scar tissue grows excessively, forming smooth, hard growths called keloids. Keloids can be much larger than the original wound, and are most commonly found on the upper chest and shoulder. However, keloids can affect any part of the body.
There are many types of treatment for keloid, ranging from cortisone injection, removal surgery, laser to radiation… All these options tend to soften and flatten the tissue but might not completely clear all traces of the scar. Among those, cortisone injection is an option that brings high effectiveness while remain being a safe technique with moderate cost. Patients can expect 80 – 90% effectiveness.
You will be consulted about technique and treatment process.
Apply antiseptic
Inject cortisone directly into the keloid
Apply antiseptic and instruction for self-care at home.
Number of treatment depends on size and thickness of the keloid. Normally, 1 to 2 injection(s) is indicated and is carried out 1 – 1.5 months apart.
After cortisone injection, the keloid is gradually softened and deceases in thickness in 3 – 4 weeks. Patient with very thick keloid can have the second injection to flatten the keloid.
Patient will experience mild pain during the injection but this will not last long after that.
Some people might experience capillary slack or contraction around the injected area. Women can have short menstruation disorder.
Depending on size and thickness of the keloid, treatment will cost from VND 200.000 to VND 1.000.000.
Percentage of recurrence after cortisone injection is relatively low compared to other treatment methods. However, a few number of patients can still have it recurred if the keloid is scratched and irritated.
