Disc herniation is a popular medical condition. Treatments vary from conservative (medication, exercising, physiotherapy, taking rest, acupuncture..) to minimally-invasive (disc decompression using laser or nucleoplasty, chymopapain injection) to surgical ones such as endoscopic discectomy or open discectomy.
Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression is a progressive minimally invasive treatment for disc herniation, which has been the flagship of Quang Minh Clinic since 1999. This treatment modality, in most cases, helps patients with herniated disc avoid open discectomy and its complications while attaining a significantly high effectiveness.

The principle of PLDD |
In this procedure, laser energy is transmitted through a thin optical fiber into the disc. The aim of PLDD is to vaporize a small portion of the inner core. The ablation of a relatively small volume of the inner core results in an important reduction of intra-discal pressure, thus inducing reduction of disc herniation. |
Treatment will be completed within one day.
Statistically, average successful rate of PLDD practice ranges from 75%-93%. From nearly 6,500 PLDD patients from June 1999 to 2013, we have recorded a successful rate of 80% and 95% for lumbar and cervical disc herniation respectively. Who can not undergo PLDD?
Open discectomy, in spite of its high effectiveness, contains significant risks as it destroys the normal structure that induces the weakening of your spine. Moreover, surgical scar could cause nerve strain, infection pertaining to affecting patient’s psychology
During PLDD treatment, patient remains in full awareness. He/she can inform doctors his/her feelings. Both local and general anesthesia have their own complication and side effects. However, it is proven that those of local anesthesia are less damaging and risky to patient’s cardiovascular system, nerves etc.
There are many treatment options for disc herniation and their effectiveness also vary from patient to patient. Factors that decide the success of each treatment are severity of the herniation, health condition of the person, other diseases etc. In fact, many people have to try different options before receiving a satisfying result. If the person does not respond well after PLDD, he/she can still consider open discectomy while the reverse is non-applicable.
