Diagnosis and Treatment Process

1. Physical Examination (30 – 60 minutes)

Based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and physical examination, our doctors conclude whether the patient could be effectively treated by PLDD method (Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression).

After being prescribed for PLDD, blood test is carried out right at Quang Minh Clinic. If the reports show normal biochemical parameters, patient would be prepared for PLDD.

2. Intravenous drip and pre-anesthesia test (30 minutes)

The pre-anesthesia test is conducted to ensure that patient’s body responds safely with anesthesia.

3. PLDD treatment (30 – 60 minutes, depends on how many discs treated)

Patient is accepted into treatment room. After local anesthesia, a thin needle (approx. 0.4 mm diameter) is inserted into the herniated disc under X-ray guidance. An optical fiber is inserted through the needle and laser energy is sent through this fiber, vaporizing a tiny portion of the disc nucleus. This creates a partial vacuum, which draws the herniation away from the nerve root, thereby relieving the pain. The effect usually is immediate.

Patients get off the table with just a small adhesive bandage and return home for 24 hours of bed rest. Then patients begin progressive ambulation, walking up to a mile. Most return to work in four to five days.

Because only a thin needle is used, there is no cutting and no scarring. Since only a tiny amount of disc is vaporized, there is no subsequent spinal instability. PLDD is different from open lumbar disc surgery because there is no damage to the back muscle, no bone removal or large skin incision. Most of the complications that may occur with open surgery are eliminated with the PLDD procedure.

4. Resting and Observation

Patient is sent to recovery room and is requested to rest for 30 – 60 minutes. Our nurses will consult medication and recovery guidelines.

Patient can be discharged when he/ she is fully fitted.
